My 72 tr6 w/ 51k on the engine has a fair amount of hesitation/miss esp at low rpms.

I replaced the usual suspects, distributor cap, points etc, no effect. I am getting ready to do the carbs but in running a compression test I got the following.

1   150/175 (dry/wet)
2   120/140
3   135/140
4   140/150
5   135/140
6   145/175

Is the low #2 enough to cause my hesitation? Do I need to pull the head? Suggestions?

IMO, you should be able to get the engine to run well with those compression numbers.  They are certainly not ideal, but the dry variation is still only about +/-12%.

What grade of oil are you using in the dashpots?  Lots of people recommend thinner oil, which can lead to hesitation.  The dashpots basically serve the same function as the accelerator pump on conventional carbs, giving a richer mixture when the throttle is first opened.  Using thin oil (or worse yet no oil) allows the mixture to go lean.
