I just bought a cylinder head off of ebay, but it appears a bit different than the one on my TR-2. I was buying it for a spare, since they are basically unobtainium for all intensive purposes. I think this is the only one in 3 years that I have ran across, that was at least reasonable in price. Anyways, the cast number is 305679. It also has a flat area by the studs, near the intake/exhaust that appears to have a stamped in number of 51151. I'm a bit confused by this. I've checked my books, but cant identify it. Can anyone help?

Kind of sounds like a TR4 head, according to TeriAnn's chart:

Nope, its definately a low port head . It has the smaller intake inlets of 1 and 1/2 inches(well 1 and 3/8 if you are exact). Plus ,we have had 4's and 4as forever, I recognize them just fine. Its just the flat spot and numberhave me baffled.

I can not identify the haead from the numbers you stated, however may be I can point you in the correct direction to find your answer.  The SPARE PARTS CATALOGUE  for the TR3 by Triumph Motor Company Ltd. shows the part number of the various heads they used and on what serial number cars they were used on.  I do not have a TR3 book , but I do have the TR4 SPARE PARTS CATALOGUE.  It lists the following heads for the TR4 production: 510918,510919,512457,512458,510084,510545,511695.  I note that each of these numbers has six digits as opposed to the five digit number you gave of 51151,  But that number is similar.  So first is there by chance a sixth digit on that number?  and Does anybody  else out there have a SPARE PARTS CATALOGUE for the TR3 who is willing to look up the numbers for the cylinder heads used?
I hope this helps.
