Hello, I a NOOB to the forum.  Recently acquired a 1965 Spitfire MK1.  1147cc motor, rubber matted interior.  Still very drivable vehicle.  A previous owner repainted the body and removed all the lettering/names from the car.  Over spray on the commission plate and poor attention to details.  Still working on fixing the mistakes.  Also have a '65 Datsun Fairlady (not running - wiring disaster).  Been a fan of British cars since my first '71 MG Midget.  And a VERY understanding wife who puts up with "toys".

Welcome to the Forum! Looks like a nice car, but then I've long been very biased towards the early Spitfires (almost as much as I am towards Heralds).  Grin

Rubber-matted interiors are pretty scarce on these cars now. What's the commission number? I'm wondering if the car is actually a good bit earlier than the "1965" titling suggests.

Commission Number FC35453  Not sure about the last number since the plate was over sprayed with paint.  But I did find the last bits of the rubber mat under the recent bad carpet covering.

Found the original steering wheel and that the nut holding the wheel on was poorly made and half stripped.  Re-threaded to 1/2-13 and made a new nut.

Spring driving season is starting here in the south.  Just finished repairing steering column repair.  The "Bell" part of the column where the indicator/lights switches are attached was not connected and horn was shorted out.  Three attempts to finally get the Steering Wheel/Wheels/Turn indicator cancel all aligned correctly!  Wired in a horn relay(Should have been a factory installed) and still have one loose brown wire from the lights switch.  I suspect it's the "Brights" flash.  But nothing in the harness to connect to.  Might make a relay for that as well.  Still positive ground car so I have to really watch how this stuff goes together.

Maybe you'll find this wiring diagram useful:

http://www.fairpoint.net/~herald948/database/wiring.htm#3 Even the factory workshop manual didn't have this US-specific diagram; it appeared only in original US editions of the Owners Manuals, and even modern reprints of those tend to be copied from home market versions (where the light switches are set up differently).

herald948 - I looked at that and have a printed version for reference.  But it's still has some missing items.  From the column light switch is a brown lead that provides ground when the light pulled back to the steering wheel.  I suspect it's the high beam flash which most English drivers use.  So there should be a relay to the blue/white lead to the high beam bulbs.  I would suspect it might have been left off for the USA.  As was the overdrive since they drove faster in the UK than USA (55mph)  What's frustrating is seeing 4 sellers of the Overdrive transmission in the UK for $280.00 and nothing here.  Love that little 1147cc motor, it rocks!
