I was looking for a VTR forum posting on TR4 mirrors and did not see one so here we go.

First, I want something original to the time period in 1962.

It is my understanding that TR4s did not come from the factory with fender or door mounted rear view mirrors, but at the buyers request the dealer could install one.

The Lucas fender mounted mirror seems to be popular but I have never been a fan of the fender mounted mirrors on TR4s.

If triumph did not supply or list a specific mirror, it would ultimately be up to the dealer or buyer to determine what mirror was installed and where to install it.

My question is, when was the bullet mirror first available?

My TR4 is a 1962. Anyone have any documentation to verify the earliest year for the bullet; old articals or car magazine pictures? Preferably specific to TR4s but if only generic info is available, that would work since it would show the mirror was at least available in 1962.

If the bullet does not go back to 1962, I will probably go with the Lucas style door mount model.

My 71 TR4 had one and I liked the style and door mount location.  Plus it was easy to adjust if someone bumped it since it was on the door.

Triumph did have an "official" accessory mirror in the mid-1960s:

(image from a 1966 Triumph accessories catalog), although these seem to have been more common on the "family" cars (Herald, 2000 sedan). Bullet mirrors are ok, but it's all a matter of personal preference. Either way, I greatly prefer door mirrors to fender mirrors!

I found my answer.

I sent an email to the Talbot company, a manufacture of bullet mirrors since 1954.  The Talbot Berlin model bullet mirror was first produced in 1954 as original equipment for the Mercedes 300SL.

According to Talbot, they produced a Junior and Senior model of the Berlin and the mirror was used as original equipment on various cars 1954 through 1974.  It was also sold to dealers/buyers for installation on cars that did not use it as original equipment.

That said, this mirror could have been installed on TR4.

They are still manufactured, but the price is rather steep in the $250 range for the Junior model Talbot Berlin.
