Are there a "best" type of air filter for strombergs (175CD)? e.g. oval etc. What's the difference between them? As mine are kinda old and I wondered which to choose.

I  probably should not try to answer you on this.  As I do not know what all filters are available. I do believe that the worst filters are the early TR 3/4 stock filters that are oil bathed with the metal screen inside.  The next best, I believe are the paper.  I am using a TR250 air cleaner that contains two round replaceable filters inside.  I am using K&N reuseable filters that I can clean and reoil.  I might add that I have SU's on the car but the TR250 filter housing was made for the Strombergs but can be adapted to  the SU's.  What I had to do was make sure that the breather holes in the front of the carbs were not blocked.  There are a number of other  commercial options such as foam type filters that I trust.

It will be interesting to see what other owners have to say about this subject.

I use the oval disposable paper element filters on my TR3/A, as I feel they are effective and cheap.  The original wire mesh things were only effective at keeping out large rocks, they stopped very little of the fine dirt and grit that wears out engines.  And where I live, we get a lot of that stuff in the air (blown in from the desert).

Test reports I've seen indicate that the K&N filters are also rather less effective at keeping out dirt; they do offer lower restriction initially, but pass more dirt and also clog more quickly.  Good for maximum performance (if you service them frequently), but not so good for engine life.  For example,
