I am attempting to replace the front motor mounts on my 62 TR4.  I am having difficulty getting to the nuts on both the top and the bottom of the mounts.  Is their a special tool needed?  Do I need to remove the radiator?  If anyone has any suggestions or tips I would be greatly appreciated any help.

I have never had to use any special tools to remove these nuts from the motor mounts.  I believe that the bottom nuts were accessed from the wheel well, but I could be wrong in that memory.  I have to admit that I have not tried to change them with the car all together.  But I do believe that the top nuts should be accessable from the front side even with the radiator in the car.  I can see that working up there with the hood in place on the car it will be tight, but should be doable.  Just remember that in tight spots even moving one flat of the nut at a time is progress.  I many of those such cases I have used a wratcheting closed end wrench to speed things up.

I agree with Charley's comment.  I am currently doing a ground up restoration on a 1962 TR4 and have not put my body back on yet, but it looks like the easiest way to get to the bottom nuts would be to remove the front wheels and access the nuts from the wheel well area just behind the springs.  From the wheel well, enter thru the triangular area between the frame, the spring tower aft support and the spring tower.  Be careful since the front brake tubing runs thru this opening also.  As I recall I put the bottom lock washer and nut on first and held the wrench while turning the mount until the nut seated then used the wrench for the final tightening, but this could be a two man job with the body on. I may have used the same process in reverse to get the nuts off, loosen the nut with the wrench then hold the wrench on the nut while turning the mount.

Hi, I recently replaced the motormounts on my 1963 TR4 and was so delighted with the results, (the elimination of lots of vibration), that I wrote up the procedure for my club newsletter, which I have not yet sent it in for publishing. There is a sequence for loosening the nuts, raising and lowering the motor to help loosen, remove then tighten the nuts, but there's too much detail to put here. If you'd like email me, (Dominick_Esposito@verizon.net) and I'll send you the article. Hymph, maybe I'll submit the article to have it printed on the VTR website.. Maybe a good idea. If you've already completed the job, great, no worries, but again if you'd like to read how I did it, drop me a note. Regards, DE

I posted the process for changing the motor mounts for a 1963 TR4. I believe the 62 is identical. You can find the writtn step by step process at the TRA site under forums. Here is a link that should get you there, http://triumphregister.lefora.com/2009/12/30/motor-mount-replacement-tr4/#post0 . Let me know how you make out and if you have completed the job. Good luck and happy wrenching, (it's a fun job). KDLS also found on the TRA site where lots for TR2,3 & 4 is happening!
