Has anyone built a paint booth or used a home made booth?
Lot's of instructions on line on how to build one, but lots of warnings and
horror stories about explotions and fires.
the cheapest booth I can find on line that is big enough is $2,000+
Suggestions?

Thanks
Dave

I assume that you are looking at painting a car.  Right?  A friend does the painting in his garage.  What is needed is to have the place free of dust and other contaminants.  This is done by covering all things with plastic and getting any new dust sources out of the garage or at least not introducing anything new to the air.  We also used my garage for the body of one car and what I did was to staple thin sheet plastic to the ceiling and let it hang to the floor.  Then in both cases we wet down the floor with a hose to get rid of any dust or dirt from that source.  The important thing is to use a good quality face mask for yourself and then keep the garage closed after you are done painting until the paint is dry (usually about 6+ hours).

What kind of quality did we get?  My car won Peoples Choice at Triumphest in 2008 and got 388 points in VTR concours this year the second car won First Place in TR3B Concours this year.  So quality can be acheived without the expensive "booth".

This may not have given you the answer that you wanted.  But it hopefully is giving you an alternative to a $2,000 paint booth that may not be used all that much.  Another alternative is to find a location that has a paint booth and see if you can rent it.

Here's a suggestion. Check out your local vocational/technical school for adult evening classes. In many areas, you can have the use of a fully equipped auto body shop for very little money. Classes in my area were something like $150 per semester, and they had a computerized frame straightener, 2 modern paint booths, welders and all sorts of gear you could never afford at home.

Some take the same courses over and over again just so they can keep using the facilities. These guys called themselves "lifers" and many of them were only too glad to help with the projects of other students.

Just a thought. It's a lot cheaper that buying or building your own booth.
