I just got a new trunk gasket and the trunk is too tight to latch properly.

The old one was a generic type which was difficult but at least it latched.

I presume my next step is to adjust the hinges to make it fit because this is supposedly the proper gasket.

Question; does the lip of the gasket go toward the outside or inside of the trunk? The cross section of the outer half of the gasket is shaped like a P and I'm calling the top half of the P the lip.

I put the "P" part of the gasket on the outside of the trunk lip. I did check another car that I believe had the original gasket still on it.  And it looked right.  I guess that I lucked out as my trunk does shut.  But it shuts very tight.  I would say that you should try to see if the gasket will set in after you put it on and then you will be able to close the trunk.  I have noticed that after mine has been closed for some time it is a lot easier to close again. And vice versa when it has been left open for awhile.

I know when I was helping judge TR4's at a concours once that I was  told that the TR4 trunk lid is one of the most difficult to get correct again after it has been removed from the car.  So don't give up because it can be refitted to look very good, it just may not happen the first time you try it.

Charley,

Thanks. After reading my post again I can see that it was clear as mud!

What I was trying to say is, looking at the gasket cross section at the bottom of the trunk opening, is the top half of the P up or down?

I tried it both ways and it seems to be slightly easier to close with the top half up, but not by much.

Right now I can't completely turn the handle to horizontal when I close the lid. I tried loosening the trunk hinge nuts and pulling the lid aft but it moved only very slightly. I guess my next move is to loosen the hinge nuts on the body and see it that will move a bit.

Okay, if I am understanding what you are asking, the gasket looks like a "IP" shape with a double leg.  The bottom of the trunk would have the P facing down which is facing outside of the trunk rather than facing the P into the trunk.
