80 Spit w/OD

« on: April 27, 2009, 06:41:06 PM »

Quoted from http://www.xs4all.nl/~msaul/ (aka Blueboy, my Spitfire Adventures)

"This month I also removed the external oil supply to the rocker shaft. Most of the comments with regards to this particular accessory are not very positive, the opinions generally stating that it does in fact detract from the reliability and longevity of the engine by reducing the supply of oil to the crankshaft."

Is this true? I was just about to order one of these oil tubes for my spit for when I get home from this deployment next month.

I am using an external oil feed on my TR4.  I am doing this because I have a  blocked oil feed through the head.  What I have found is that the hole in the external feed is 1/8 inch in size.  This is to much oil even without any oil coming up the normal way.  I welded it shut and drilled it out to just under 1/16 inch. (That means I cut the flow down to 1/4 of what it was.) That still seems to be a lot of oil.
I would say that the extra oil is likely not needed in a motor that is performing well.  Look at the rocker shaft after the car has been running and see how much oil is up there.  Or if you want to cleanup a mess you can start the car without the rocker cover on it and see for yourself how much oil you are getting up there.  Even at a low idle you are likely to see a bunch of oil dancing all over the place.

I cannot comment on how much the crankshaft is or is not getting as a result of the redirected oil supply.
