I have a Tr-4 gas tank which is rusted through and want to replace it with a good TR-250 tank that I have. The TR-4 tank has a vent, the TR-250 tank does not. I dont know why one is vented and the other is not- they are both carburator cars. Can I use the unvented tank?

We never know for sure if the equipment on our cars is original.  But in things like a gas tank , we assume that it is.  With that said, I have a TR4 which is CT 20,000 plus and it has an unvented gas tank.  Runs fine with out the vent.  I really feel that the "vent" was more of an overflow.  I seem  to recall somewhere in my past readings that they referred to it as an overflow.  The gas caps are not all that tight to need a vent.

Could the TR250 cap be vented and the TR4 cap not? I don't know, just a thought.

Essentially the same gas cap adorns most all of the TR's.  The designs appear to be different is small ways.  But none of them are tight enough that I would call them sealed.  And I would guarantee you that the TR2/3/4 gas caps were never even close to being "sealed".
