Could someone tell me the correct torque spec for the front suspension TR4A trunnion bolt (the one that that goes through lower outer wishbones and trunnion). The Factory Manual and Bentley has tightening procedure for TR4 but not TR4A.
Thanks,

I just read through my four different manuals and the only thing I could find was for the TR4.  So my question to you is why would you not use the same spec for the 4A?  You do have the difference that you only have one nut rather than two as on the TR4.  But the idea of having .004 end float should be the same.  With only the question of should you have a total of .008 end float because you only have one place to measure.  But then the diference between .004 and.008 is really small.

Thanks for the reply Charley. I don't think it would be safe to assume that the 4 and 4A procedures are the same - fairly significant differences in suspension design. The 4A design is pretty much a perfect match to the front suspension design for the TR6 and from what I can gather, the torque spec for that car is 50 - 65 foot pounds, meaning a tight fit with no end float. I got this from 6-Pack forum posts quoting Bentley and Haynes manuals. I would be more inclined to believe that the correct torque for the 4A would be the same as the TR6, and that is where I have it set as of last night when I reassembled.

To take the discussion a step further, I'm perplexed as to why this spec is so hard to find (at least for me!). I have the Factory Service manual, Bentleys, Autobook, Piggot's book and I have scoured the net, all to no avail. Also posted the question in the Triumph autox mail list with no response.

In deference to you Charley, in the absence of hard data, one would tend to assume the 4 and 4A would be the same, but the question remains .004 or .008 end float. However my intuition would tell me that any end float on the 4A design would result in something like this: http://www.computeresources.com/TR4-A/trunnion.htm, which came out the last 4A I serviced 25 years ago (makes a nice paperweight). No, don't remember what I torqued that replacement to, probably was done with an end wrench and BFH.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

I agree that the TR6 and TR4A should be the same and that the TR4 is different. So if you have a spec for the TR6 that would be the one to use.  I am in the process of rebuilding the front suspension for a TR4.  I am amazed at the wear that some of the parts have.  I have two lower wishbone units that have been worn all of the way through the rear nylon bushing and into the metal of the wishbone.  Then another piece that has the front bushing worn considerably.  I can only imagine that some of these cars were driven hard with a lot less attention than they needed.
Best wishes,

I understand about the ramifications of abuse and lack of proper maintenance, especially on suspension components. Fortunately, we not only have replacement parts still available, but in many cases a variety of different types from various vendors.
Good luck with your rebuild and Happy New Year.
