My 76 Spitfire 1500 has two.  One on the windscreen post driver's side and one on the plate inside the driver's door.  Both are FM43075U. What are your #'s? Where are they located? Perhaps we can identify if they are from 76.  Huh

On some Triumphs there are several numbers either stamped into the sheet metal (later cars) or stamped onto tags affixed to the metal. There is a body number that may or may not be the same as the VIN number.

On Stags, for instance, there is a VIN number on tags at the windshield and the commission plate affixed to the door. On the radiator panel at the front of the engine bay, there are tags with the Body number, which may or may not match the VIN, and the Sales number, which never matches anything.

It could be you're seeing a body or sales number tag, or your car is comprised of parts from two or more different original vehicles. Surely, you want the numbers on the windshield and door commission plate to match your title and registration. Motor Vehicles might give you a hard time otherwise.
