On my 66 4A the gear shift really rattles loud going through the gears when I get up around 3000 RPM's. Anyone have any thoughts on how to cut the rattle noise down. Is this a common problem Huh

Hi Rick,
This is a VERY common problem. Try replacing the anti-rattle (that should tell you something!) spring and plunger. See Moss #'s 329-420 & 848-150. For less than $4 you get the parts, but it'll take an afternoon to replace them! Gotta remove so much stuff to get at these little buggers...

Good luck!

I had this problem, exactly as you describe. It was so loud I used to hold ther gear shift as I accelerated so that my hand deadened some of the sound. I did the anti-rattle spring and plunger too. I could never see how anything that small could cure such a loud rattle, and of course, it didn't. The installation process has you packing grease around it, and that helped for a while, but not while enough.

I stumbled on my solution. I am a new TR owner. I'd been learning new things in my maintenance schedule, and came to timing. I'd shyed away from this before. I don't know why, its dead easy. My timing was way outside spec, or even ideal (which is a few degrees more than the 4 BTDC that the book recommends).

I reset the timing and BINGO! the rattle's gone. Not slightly less, not bettter: GONE!

I hope you have the same outcome.
If you need help setting the timing, let me know.

Cheers,

Brian
