The original engine on my TR3B is the TR4 engine and the area below the #3 cylinder and left side looking forward where all others seem to have a number stamped  is smooth and apperars to never have had anything marked there. This is a very late model TR3B. Any ideas why this is missing ?
Thanks

I am new to the Triumph world, but my TR3B, TCF120L, does not have the same engine number on the block that the Heritage build sheet says it had when it left the factory in May of 1962. I doubt I will ever find out why or when it was replaced, but I know that mine is not an original engine. The body number does not even match as the Heritage sheet says it should be TCF308, and the body number plate says 308/TSF. It said it should be a black body with a red interior, and now it is a white body with black interior. But at least the body number matches TR3B production, and the TR4 engine is a bit newer than the car, but basically the right engine, so I am still happy and hope to find out what happened in the past eventually. But for now, it is what it is.

This may be a long shot, but. . .I read in one of my many TR3A books that factory rebuilt engines had the engine number completely ground off.  I do think, however, that it was replace by a new number.
