since my '79 isn't and will never be a concours Queen, and i like playing with cars, i've begun a scheme of retrofitting various and sundry bits from my '76 onto the '79, which includes swapping the steering column and doing some judicious rewiring of the dipswitch and wiper controls; stripping paint from chrome trim and adding some Stag-style rear panel paint treatment. i have a factory steel hardtop which is unfortunately not in the best condition, but is the focal point of serious consideration. i gave thought to painting it black, to contrast the white body, but in light of the lack of insulation i dread the thought of Deep South sunlight on it...

i remember now why i dislike Lucar connectors.

over the last couple of weekends i've managed to get most of the wiring issues sorted out from retrofitting the older switchgear to the '79, and started in on the front bumper swap from rubber to chrome; decided to keep the large rubber absorbers on the ends of the frame, so i cut the brackets back at the top for the chrome bumper, installed it, and then installed the rubber blocks and cut the bumper skin apart for the covers for the blocks. with a couple of well hidden screws, they'll stay in place perfectly. i added, on a whim, a set of Ford Pinto wheel covers to the car; they look so retro on it, and so much better than those Tonka Toy plastic center caps. at least IMHO. the Spit is so therapeutic to work on...
