Hello !

 Huh

I have a couple of questions regarding timing setup for my 1968 GT6 MK1.

I have a Delco-Remy D200 distributor and no emission control whatsoever (...but twin Strombergs 150 CDSE...go figure !) There's only one notch on the timing pulley (early type) so BTDC degrees are not easy to figure out. Should I set the mark right on the pointer at iddle ? I know vacuum advance as to be unplugged before I start, but where do I set the vernier at first ? Will I get enough play with the vernier to get the correct advance or should I set the mark left of the pointer (and by how much) right away ?

The car runs but with a lot of pinging. I use octane number 91 fuel.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom !

I would say your timing is too far advanced if you are getting pinging with 91 octane.
I would set the vernier in the middle and then set the timing to the timing mark.

I got this information from the Spitfire&GT6 magazine site. I hope it helps.

***The recommended timing for a Mk1 or Mk2 Spit. Adjust as follows:
1. Rotate the Vernier adjuster knob counterclockwise until it won't turn anymore.
2. Position the crankshaft so that the front cylinder is at TDC and ready to fire. (The pointer on the timing chain cover will be lined up with the timing mark on the pulley)
3. Rotate the distributor body clockwise until the points just begin to open (make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 piston) A test lamp is helpful for this operation.
4. Tighten the distributor clamp to lock the distributor in place.
5. Rotate the vernier adjuster knob until you achieve 13 degrees of advance (each click of the adjustment knob is equal to 1 degree of advance)
