I amlooking to cover the colour of tr4 engines. This does not seem to be covered in any books. By all the images that I see it appears they are black , though Ive seen some tr4A red. Does any one know

Yes, they are black.  That is according to the Restoration Guidelines  published by the Triumph Register of America.  You can get a free download of these standards by signing to to www.triumphregister.com and click on the events and news window.  They are absolutely the most helpful thing that I have ever found.   Good luck.

Great thanks for that Dose the williams book on restoration cover these things?

I have never heard of the Williams Book on Restoration.  Guess I have lived a sheltered life.

The Restoration Guidelines from Triumph Register of America that Charley mentioned above is for the side screen cars.  The version for the 4 & 4A is for sale from the  same location Charley noted.

The basic block for all of the TR2s through the 4A is the same with the only way of telling them apart is to check its serial number.  The side screen engines have a TS prefix (TR3Bs excluded) while the 4 & 4As have a CT.  Both however have the same E suffix.  All were painted semi gloss black.
