Hello all,
I'm assembling a basket case TR4A solid axle. I currently have a  restored bare frame and am putting together the rear axle housing, springs etc. to the frame. Question: does the axle housing go over the top of the frame? Are the shackles positioned above the wing support bracket? I think I may have a TR4 axle, as there is no buffer pad on the top of the axle housing. Could some email me a photo of that area, that is, the spring, shock arm spacer, and housing, and that buffer pad. Maybe I could weld one on the axle housing I have. It would really be a great help. slantws AT comcast DOT net. Thanks Jerry

Jerry,

Not sure if you got a response on this. We have a solid axle TR4A and yes, the axle does go above the frame. The rear spring shackles go up from the frame mounts. The TR4A did not have a rebound bumper attached to the axle. It uses the same bumper that is mounted to the body above the axle that the IRS swing arm uses.We have an axle from a TR4. The sure fire way to distinguish between the two is the emergency brake mount. The TR4 has a bell crank on the left side and the 4A has brakets welded on each end as it has two cables instead of one.

If you have any other questions, let me know. I've been tinkering with our car for over 20 years and have rebuilt or modified just about everything.
