Anyone ever attempt to refurbish/repair a tank?  Are there instructions anywhere?

The inside of mine needs a good cleaning and resurfacing.

Check with your local Radiator repair shop, mine did a great job for a reasonable price.

I just yanked the tank.  Easy job.

I'll be doing the job myself.  I poured out 3 gallons of gas that looks like apple juice.  There were a few bits of black chunks that came out, too.  I'll be flushing out the fuel line, and replacing anything suspect (filter).

I'll document the process and post pics as I go.

OK.  Got the tank out and cleaned up.  Etching and coating the inside this weekend.  Will paint outside black.

The kit I got for the tank, only went so far.  I went to Home Depot and got a gallon of Phosphoric Plus Prep & Etch to finish the inside cleaning.  I pumped out the remaining bad fuel from the line, and need to clean out the carbs.

The outside of the tank has a coat of paint.  I'll do the inside tonight or tomorrow.

Needless to say, I have safety glasses, gloves and a mask while working with these chemicals! Shocked

What are you using? POR-15?

Similar.  I just got a kit from Hirsch Automotive.  The Prep/Etch was insufficient for my tank, so I got a gallon of it from Home Depot for $13.  A little cheaper than POR-15.

Looks like I need a new fuel pump now.  All the lines are in and the tank looks good.  But the fuel pump is like a sieve.

I'm curious to know:

1. Did you simply rinse the tank with the Phosphoric Plus? Or was there anything else to the process? Having never done it before, I don't know if it's that easy or not.

2. How did you dispose of the left over chemicals? (if you don't mind my asking)

I will need to do this too soon, just wondering...

I got a kit from hirschauto.com and some etch from the local hardware store. I had to do a serious amount of rinsing and dumping (strained and reused fluid). Then I used the internal coating fluid.

I just take the old fluid to a local parts store or at the semi-annual chemical round-up.

I completed the fuel system a couple of weeks ago.  I posted it on the Facebook Spitfire Mk2 group page.  I'll see if I can get those pictures to here later.

Good news!  The car started and ran after I cleaned up the gummed up carbs.  I have had her up the street a few times.  I even got her to start on the first crank a few days ago in the cold.   Cheesy

I have replaced a few other parts within the last month.  Will try to post those pics, too.  Grin
