Hello to all.

I am searching for a Spitfire and really don't know what to look for as to availability of parts, cost (older cars verse newer), pitfalls and benefits of certain years.

I found two Spitfires (1976, 1975) having only seen the 75.  It's in rough shape having spent the last several years in a barn with cats!  The car looks to be mostly rust free but that's about it.  The windshield is broken, interior is gone, don't know if it runs, shifts, etc.  Anybody care to give me some ideas of it's worth?

The 76 needs a clutch (according to the owner) otherwise is supposed to be very presentable, again I do not know if it runs, etc.   I hope to be able to view it in the next month or so when he can get unclutered and out of his garage. Price on that one is $850 which sounds fair enough depending if it lives up to what it's been touted as!   I am wanting to find one that needs restored for enjoyment purposes or therapy as my wife calls it!

Is it worth it so purchase the rougher one and part out?  Is there a market for Spitfire parts?  Are Spitfires for the most part rugged cars or should I plan to keep the spare one around for replacing parts on the driver?  Your input, suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.   I live in Des Moines, IA and look forward to meeting any of you in this area.   Thanks and I'll keep you posted.

Regards,

Mike

Hey, Mike.
I just want to welcome you.
I can't say a lot to help you but I can tell you my experience.
I bought a '74 (with hardtop included)from an old Air Force buddy about 14 months ago for $1500. Absolutely no rust, the body had been waxed constantly and the paint is pretty good. (Does need a paint job to make it look great tho.)
Mechanically mine is in what I'd call good shape. It's a daily driver although I've had to replace a few things. (starter, master cylinder, alternator, and one brake hose.)
Parts aren't that hard to find thru Victoria British, Roadster Factory and a couple other places and I don't consider them expensive.Like I said. these other guys can help you better but my feelings are to get one that runs, has no rust and needs only minor mechanical and cosmetics.
