There is a TR6 Tranny up for auction on E-bay and they say that it will fit on a TR4. Can anyone confirm this? I think the synchro on my second gear is shot and I'm not sure if I feel brave enough to take on a tranny rebuild myself. I thought this might be a plausible solution. Any comments are appreciated.

Peter,I have a TR6 OD tranny in my Italia (TR-3)...but...it appears the factory added about 1/2" in length to the casting for the case at the flange where it attaches to the engine.  All I had to do in the Italia was slot the rear mount plate that bolts across the chassis so that the rear mount could go back a little.  Did it by drilling a second hole and then filing the two holes on each side together to create a slot (no sawzall, dremel, or anything else for that matter at the time).

Look at the front flange of your tranny where it meets the engine.  If it's flat, with no raised bosses, you'll have the same issue I did.  If there are raised bosses where some bolts go through into the engine block, it should be a bolt in fit.

Good Luck!

There have got to be a whole lot of TR4 trannys out there just sitting around waiting to be acquired/ picked up/ purchased.  Many folks have converted their TR trannys to Toyota five speeds, which I have done.   And then others have junked out any number of cars.  I would say  that you should advertise on the VTR classified for a TR4 tranny and see what you get.
I can also tell you that I personally rebuilt a TR4 tranny a number of years ago.  And I am not a mechanic!!!  The tranny worked very well when I got done with it.

So unless you are looking at a TR6 overdrive tranny on ebay , I would recommend that you keep looking if the TR6 fit isn't effortless.  Plus you may be able to find one closer to home if the ebay one is not local.

Peter,

I installed a TR-6 OD tranny in my 4A back in about '84.  It has worked great ever since.  The end of the input shaft is a little longer on the TR4 transmission, but the 6 trans. fits.

The TR6 transmission is a direct swap.  However, if you want to explore the Toyota conversion, check out the thread on 6-pack.org:  http://6-pack.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6383&highlight=toyota+transmission
