As this Forum grows, consider cross posting to the other Triumph related lists.  This gets the widest exposure to ALL triumph enthusiasts.

So how many Stag Owners are here today??

Remember, the BEST Trophies are miles on the odometer, stone chips in the paint, and dead bugs on the windshield

Never had a Stag, have a TR 4A, but I have read several articles that indicated there were numerous problems. I like the looks but what do you all think about the problem areas?

The problems have pretty much all been solved. The Triumph V8 was well designed, but badly made by an unmotivated work force. With careful assembly from quality parts, the Stag engine is reliable.

That said, it does not suffer benign neglect the way American V8s do. Once you have it right, you have to work to keep it right with regular oil changes and coolant flushes. It does not need to be driven carefully, but a watchful eye is required. The reward is a silky smooth engine with plenty of power, a great exhaust note and room for 4. You don't get that combination in any other Triumph commonly available in the US.

If you become serious about owning a Stag, join the Triumph Stag Club USA at http://www.tscusa.org. We are the experts in this vehicle and will help you right through the ownership process from looking at and evaluating cars to restoring them and solving those oft mentioned "problems". Visit us at VTR2007 in Valley Forge.

As Wayne says, all the problems are sorted, but that does not mean that everyone applies the remedies correctly.   Undecided

When reading an article regarding Triumph Stags, you always need to consider the source and ask yourself "has this person ever owned a Triumph Stag and belonged to a club that knows how to make them reliable?"    Huh

Both of those together are very important because simply owning one and not knowing how to make it reliable, or simply doing a little investigative journalism usually nets a negative article by an unknowing ignorant person.  Angry

I must warn you that there is a nasty Triumph Stag disease called "gotta'aveone-omore".  You catch it once you see one, but if you hear and see one the infection is instant. This disease is only fatal if the significant other in your life does not catch the disease.

So if you get inflicted by "gotta'aveone-omore" , make sure you get properly innoculated by seeking out the proper facts and information on your diagnosis from reputable sources like the Triumph Stag Club USA.  This club has a lot of great practicioners who are expert in the Stag disease.  You can usually never be cured of the disease, but our club will help make the symptoms enjoyable.

Could  you give me some info on the engine. Was it a Triumph design? Why a V 8 instead of a six etc.

Rick,
There is a lot of info, but in a nutshell it is a over square 90 degree cast irom block,  forged crank in 5 main bearings, 2997 cc , overhead cams in aluminum heads, dual ZS 175 CDSE carbs.
Yes, the Stag's V8 it all Triumph Design.  The V8 always captivated UK engineers, certainly since it was such a big deal here in the USA.
In short, Triumph wanted to compete in the world market with companies like Mercedes Benz who already had a V8 coupe adn convertable.  The target competition was the Mercedes Benz 450 SL.

You might start by reading some suggested books on Stags.  First stop is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_Stag then look for the references in that article.
