What year??

Is there any way to tell what year a car is by the commission number? I am looking at CT24101L. Thanks.

According to our own VTR web site info on the TR4 --  http://www.vtr.org/TR4/TR4-production.shtml -- this car would've been built later in the 1963 calendar year. But that still might make it a 1964 model year car and/or it could well have been first sold and titled as such.

Another way is to purchase a Heritage Certificate for the car in question.  This will tell you the exact date the car was manufactured, what was supplied with the car( accessories),color, where it was shippedand original engine and body numbers.

It can be obtained through www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk

The price is in British pounds so it has gone up lately.  You would give them the Commission number, body number and engine number.  But they apparently only look up by the Commission number and then tell you the engine number that was shipped with that car.

In the states cars were given the model year for when they were sold not when they were manufactured.  Therefore many of the models like TR3B that were all made in 1962 are listed as everything from 1962 through 1964.  California even went so far as to place a metal plate on the car with the year on it such as STC63 for a car SOLD in 1963.  But the car was not necessarily made in 1963, just sold in that year.

Thanks for all that info folks! Well I bought the car, inspite the fact it is a 1963 and was advertised as a '64 (now my user ID is wrong) and drove it 1100 miles from Vancouver to Calgary, over the Rocky mountains and mostly in the rain. I almost made it too, when the water pump gave out and I had to be towed for the final few miles. Other than that and a minor problem with the wipers, the car ran great! Now I am anxiously waiting for parts to get it back on the road for the summer before I start the restoration of the body. I'm sure I will be asking lot's of questions come this winter!
