My 73 burns oil with a noticable residue on 4 of 6 cylinders. I live in Wisconsin but only drive about 8 mos. out of the year. I generally use 10W40 but have seen a number of posts in various forums about using 20W50, presumably to slow oil loss. Any thoughts on what's best - short of a rebuild at this time. (Two kids in college makes it tough.)

So, where in Wisconsin?
The sad part is that changing to different oil or using additives does not repair or replace worn parts.
The good part is that sometimes a higher viscosity can reduce oil consumption. Changing to 20w50 may help, just keep an eye on the pressure gage so it does not run high. I doubt that will be a problem though.
Since you only drive in warmer weather you might use straight weight oil if that does not work. If you do that, I would recommend starting at 30w or 40w and see how it works. Only 50w as a last resort. Just remember that you might lose some protection when the engine is cold because you would not have the benifit of multi weight oil.

Thanks. I went with 20W50. I know some real engine work is due but we'll try this for now.

I'm in the Milwaukee area. Cool
