I recently started using this Forum, it seems like a nice place.  I have asked several questions, gotten a couple of answers and answered the others by other research.
I have to say, this is the quietest Forum I have been on.  There is certainly no lack of members, and having gone through and read all of the posts in this section there is no lack of knowledge.  I see posts that folks have made, with maybe one or two responses, sometimes none, but upwards of four hundred views.  I have a hard time believing that 398 of the viewers had nothing to add to the thread.  Come on people, contribute your knowledge, thats what this is all about.

Hi Tim,
I totally agree and share your disappointment!
For more than two years I have tried several different approaches to be more than just a paying member and actually become part of this club and thought this forum might finally be a way to that end. Isn't looking that way and I am loosing interest. Sad

Hi Tom,
6 days and 60 views and you are the only one who seems to know how to type.  Oh well, shut the light off when you leave!

I suspect the biggest problem is that this Forum is a bit late in arriving; there's LOTS of competition out there, and it's been out there for many years. E-mail lists and possibly some news groups are going on 15, 20 years or more, and other major Triumph club forums have been around for years as well. For example, there's been an "official" VTR e-mail list -- never getting huge use and almost none in recent years -- since at least the early 1990s!

Give it time; I think things'll pick up here.

On a lot of forums the newcomers sit back and read a lot before venturing out and posting.  And every automotive forum I've been on has had a lot of lurkers who rarely if ever post but seem to sponge up the knowledge at a great rate.

Two ideas to kickstart ( or should I say crank start?  ) these forums:  1. a Show us what you have thread.   2.  trip reports thread (where you went and possibly some pictures to share).

Hi Tracey,

Something I have been waiting to see - somebody with good positive ideas. Some of us have done this in the Image Gallery but dedicated forums might be a good thing. Hey Blake, check this guy out!

Tracey, on a drive in Wisconsin.

Andy, I hear you, but you probably know me well enough by now to know I like to stir things up and see if we can get someone to rise to the occasion. What I would really like to see are some of the old time VTR members become more active. Not only would the knowledge be great but it would be fun trading thoughts with others that drove these cars in the 50's and/or 60's.

Aack, why do I suddenly feel even OLDER than my not quite 55 years? I mean, I'm a charter member of VTR (#113), and I'd been driving (legally, and we won't talk about any other way right now...ahem)Triumphs for over five years before VTR came into existence, and my dad had been driving them since late 1958!

I suddenly feel the urge to sit on a rocking chair on a porch somewhere, pull out a pocket knife and start whittlin' away.... Grin

Andy, I was pretty sure you had been around for a while! Wink

I am only 61 but started driving when I was 10. I worked on farms during the summers and it came with the territory.

I purchased my first Triumph, a BRG '64 TR4 in the Spring of '65. I have owned a lot of cars and that is still my favorite of all of them.

well here it goes...the lurker speaks.  i am 27 years old and have had my 58 tr3 since i was 16 and it has an interesting history.  my dad bought it in 1969 after going to his first hill climb and the racer who owned the car had it for sale on the trailer after the race.  he bought it for cash right there without knowing anything about cars.  after making the car street legal (putting the windshield back on and getting a muffler) he drove it untouched for 27 years (learning everything about being a mechanic in the process).  The car had american racing mags that my dad traded to a guy for wire wheels in 1971. (he always regret that).  After numerous trips to watkins glen and limerock in my childhood  the bug got me and i restored my first english sports car: 1971 mg midget when i was 14-15 (while my dad restored his 68 etype).  i sold the midget and bought a 59 tr3 basketcase to restore.  We moved to a much smaller house and unfortunately a much smaller garage, so my dad cut me a deal:  sell the 59 tr3, go to carlisle and sell everything i had for the midget, the 59 tr3, and all the new parts i had and give him the money, and his tr3 would be mine.  i did that and drove the car about 15,000 miles every year until this fall when i started a frame off restoration. the car is great, the body is what was failing, the race engine was still pulling strong since 1969.  carb rebuild in 1990 though.  engine has a milled head, balanced crank, 11:1 compression, and a detroit locker rearend. (fun in the rain).  old-school cut springs, and hand made anti-roll bar, not to mention bent spindles for extra camber.  absolutely love this car and can't wait to get it back on the road.  cheers.

Hi TS252,

That is a great story about LBC's and sharing a hobby with your Dad. Just the kind of thing I like to read about.

Thanks, and welcome to the forum!

Tom, do you mean dedicated image galleries?  By model for instance?

Yep... BRAVO for the positive ideas!  I think Andy makes a good point, this forum came into existence very late in the game and there are many quality alternatives out there including Mark Bradakis' Triumph lists.  Some folks prefer the Listserv (or Mailman) format where all the posts are emailed directly, or "pushed", to them.  The forum format, like this one, requires people to log in, and "pull" the information they are interested in.  There are pros and cons to each system, and I admit, it's taken me a bit to get into the habit of visiting this forum every day, but I do.

The number of members in this forum continues to grow steadily, it's up over 600.  Please don't give up just yet, these things grow virally, via word of mouth and with good topic seeds, such as the two mentioned.  Do start them, I think they'd be great reading!

Tom, careful what you wish for! <VBG>  Or should that be <VBEG> (Very big EVIL grin!?!)  If you are looking to be more than just a paying member, I have plenty for you to do... volunteer and we can get you involved in several different areas depending on how much time you have to offer up.  I'm serious, like any volunteer organization or club, it's success depends largely on the efforts of very few members, and I'd be grateful for any help you (or anyone else) may care to offer.  I'm available daily until about 11pm at 313-259-4460 for anyone that wants to discuss an idea.

All the best,

Possibly, I like the model gallery idea but the trip gallery is very intriguing. At any rate it is tracepac's idea and he should be in on this too.

I know, I should have more patience. Sometimes I feel like the vulture sitting in the tree that looks over to his partner and says "enough of this waiting, I am going to go and kill something." I feel there is so much potential for this site that it is frustrating, especially when people ask questions and have to some times wait long periods for answers.

I might add that at Triumphest this fall in Tahoe where Tracepac hopes to finally gain possession of "The car".  But then if you are in a hurry you could go for the boxes of parts and the body shell.  Which is the state of affairs right now.  But things are moving along.  Today we got the inner sill replaced and are working on the new floor pan.  Happy wrenching!!!!!  Roll Eyes Tongue

Hey Tim,
I double what you said. These forums are to meet and help fellow Triumph Buffs . Even if you don't know the exact answer, you surely have a opinion, that all most of us want anyway. Come on people chime in.
