Hi all,
Here are a couple more questions.
First, were does the sub-harness for the overdrive come out from under the tranny cover?  This car didnt have OD in the past, so if it is a dedicated hole it may never have been drilled.

Two:  does the tranny cover get set in any kind of body putty or any other type of sealer?  Seems any rain that splashes up under it will run right down onto the floor pan and soak the carpet in short order.  Sealing it from the visible lip seems like it will trap the water and sealing it between the floor lip and the back side of the cover isnt practical.

Last (for now) where do the 2 overdrive wires from the sub-harness (one brown and one white) terminate?  The wiring diagrams I have do not show the OD wiring.

Thanks in advance!

Tim, Victoria nor Moss show any seals for the trans cover, however The Roadster Factory catalog does show seals for the front(at the bulkhead) the rear(at the drive shaft tunnel) and down both sides. They all appear to be placed at the outer edges of the cover to match up with the connecting panel. I thought I remembered seeing a felt seal on previous cars but could not remember until I actually saw the picture. I don't know how much you've dealt with these cars, but I highly recommend getting catalogs from all three of the above mention places. They are great for reference. I lived with one in my hand, when I rebuilt my last TR3 and still had parts I couldn't identify. I'm on my second TR3 and both came to me in pieces. Oh, I now know what the parts were that I couldn't identify before. Hope this helps. Joe

Thanks Joe,
One question down 2 to go.
I am just getting this project moving again after about a 15 year hiatus.  I have an old Moss catalog and a mini catalog from TRF.  I quit using Victoria a long time ago as I felt their quality was sorely lacking.  Maybe they have improved by now.
Getting current catalogs is on the short list of things to do.

So, anyone else want to take a stab at the other 2 questions?

Thanks,
Tim

I have a foggy memory on question 1 from an overdirve 3 I had in the late 60's. I recall that the o/d wires ran along the left floor pan, up the firewall and back under the dash thru the grommet in the firewall. I don't recall this very clearly and have no idea whether the o/d wires were bundled into the factory harness. I will be in the same place as my reference books in about 2 weeks and will then try to look further.

Tim,
Re: Question 1.  The part number for the transmission cover changed (again) at
TS60000. My TR3A (TS72099L [no "O"]) was 95% original & the cover had a pre-drilled
and rubber plugged 1" hole, located 2" to the left of top center and 3 1/2" back from the front flange. When I finally found an OD & installed it, I assumed it was for the wiring.  The holes for the OD relay had been factory pre-drilled at the back left side of the battery box and that 1" hole seemed to be the logical route from tranny to relay. I used the same grommet that accommodates the choke and temp gauge line thru
the firewall. Hope this helps.

More to the overdrive sub harness routing. Not surprisingly, the routing on my old car was apparently not very original. The Moss Motors catalog, fall/winter 2007, page 39, shows 3 separate components to the sub harness. The section connected to the transmission cut outs and o/d solenoid apparently passes thru a grommet in the trans cover, shown as #8 in the Moss diagram. The same catalog on page 70 shows as #25 the position of the grommet in the trans cover. On the cover for the car I am working on now, the hole for that grommet is 10.5" to the rear of the front flange of the trans cover and 2.25" above the bottom flange. Hope this helps.
