The day my TR3B arrived in Allentown

WWW
« on: May 03, 2007, 05:17:36 PM »

I am supposed to receive my car Friday, May 4. If it is delivered, I need to know if there are special octane or lead requirements for a 1962 TR3B? Any advice is appreciated as this is my first ever vintage car (except for when current vintage cars were current cars).
Thanks for all advice.

Dave,
You want to use the highest octane fuel you can get and add lead additive.
I believe I read one time they were made to take 104 octane gas when made.
If work on the valve system hasn't been done to upgrade to unleaded gas, you may want to go to your local auto parts store and add a container of lead additive.
Quick hint to quiet the car down is to use synthetic oils in the rear end, tranny and engine. You won't believe how much it quiets the car.

The fuel requirements for the car are simply ordinary regular gasoline.
If the vihicle has had the valve train upgraded for unleaded fuel, so much the better, but a few tanks of unleaded gas while you sort things out won't hurt anything.  The engine will run more smoothly and produce slightly more power on the higher octane fuel, but the lower octane ergular won't hurt it.  If you are going to drive the car a lot, consider getting the hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel, but one tank of leaded every few months will handlw the valve lubrication requirements.

Have a TR 4A and use the highest octane I can find. Never have added any lead additives and have put on about 6000 since I bought it. I have read that lead additive is not necessary as the valves have had plenty of lead built up on them from all the miles in the past using lead gas. Not sure if this is true but so far no problems for me.
