Does anyone have guidance on ignition timing for a 1973 GT6 Mk 3 fitted with Lucas 22D distributor running 87 octane gas?  I am going for a non-smog set-up.  I am thinking about starting at 12-deg BTDC Static and dynamic at idle with vacuum advance disconnected but wonder if this maybe too aggressive.  Mark

Without the vacuum (advance or retard - you didn't mention WHICH 22D it was) hooked up, the timing should be in the 10-14 BTDC range for best performance.  Try 12 for starters and proceed from the by advancing or retarding the timing until you're advanceed as far as you can go without getting any pinging under a  load.

For a load test, I recommend putting the car in 4th gear at 1000 rpms and floor it through 3000 rpms (obviously in a safe place where you won't have to deal with ther traffic or be breaking any laws.)  If you get pinging, it will most likely be between 2000-3000 rpms.
Best of luck!
