1980 Spit

« on: November 04, 2007, 03:19:12 PM »

I recently acquired an `80 SPIT that has slight backfire, spitting, when shifting gears, more obvious when shifting at higher revs.  I've had `72 and `73 SPITs but have no experience (or manual) with the emission gear on the `80.  Any ideas on the problem and fix?
Note: I'm trying to get this car registered in California  (previous post).
UPDATE:   I did get this car registered!  But it's still spitting.  Any ideas?

This Spitfire is 20 years newer than my range of experience but here's a couple of general comments. Do the easy things first. Check all the tuneup components and replace anything suspect. Check the timing and advance too. Check for vacuum leaks (I use spray carb cleaner). Then take a look at the carburetor dampers (I think these still used the Zenith Stromberg damper type) particularly the damper oil.

Just had same problem with 78 spitfire.  I started with checking for vacuum leak.  Found leak at intake manifold.  Replaced manifold gasket but problem continued.  One loud pop out exhaust when shifting.  Found that the "gulp" valve was bad.  The valve is also known as a diverter valve, between the smog pump and the exhaust maifold.  Diagnosised by disconnecting air pump drive belt and driving.  No poping.  Valve is located where the air pump transitions from rubber to steel.  Part $18.  This what worked for me.
