.....or what may be the lack thereof...heat, that is.  I'm not getting any and it appears that the cable is functioning.  Before I remove the entire dash assembly to get at the heater...is there any other possible easier way to try to resolve this problem?

Well, the three obvious thoughts would be (1) to check the supply and return hoses for kinks that could prevent cooling water from flowing, (2) to try backflushing the heater core to make sure it isn't blocked,  and (3) to check the heater control valve for prper operation. That is, if your car ever had air conditioning. I don't know if non A/C cars had a heater control valve. I think the heater control valves are NLA, but there is a Volvo valve that's a close match and can be adapted.

How about some pictures and a report on that Sprint conversion?
