Greetings All,

I have had my front tires balanced several times.  I have even replaced the tires, but I get a shimmy, like out of balance, right about 55 mph.  It is not there until I get to about 55 and then it goes away as soon as I exceed 55.  It is driving me nuts.  Any ideas what I should check?

Thanks,

I had the same thing happen with my old red line tires. I even rotated them and still had the problem. New tires did the trick and I later realized the old tires were coming apart to the point that the one I saved for a spare expanded so much that I had to let the air out to get it out of the tire well.

Since you changed tires yours would be more likely to be an alignment problem or worn parts in the steering. The shocks might add to the problem but would most likely not be the only problem. On the older military trucks we used to find that when the toe was set neutral it could produce this effect.

i once had midget w/ a similar problem, turned out to be the u-joints to the driveshaft.  the problem started out barely noticeable but gradually worsened over time.

If you have a USA spec TR6 with the beauty trim rings I have heard of asking the tire shop to balance the wheels with the trim rings installed.  This 55mph shimmy seems to be common to those running the OEM steel rims.  I too have the steel rims but my shimmy is closer to 60-65mph.  I have yet to bring my wheels back in to get balanced with the trim rings installed, but is on my to-do list.  Cheers.

If the driveshaft has been out of the car, and the flanges were not marked for re-installation purposes, and it was re-installed without reference to the scribed marks, your driveshaft may be out of balance.
