Does anybody out there know if there is a correct way to place a head gasket on the block?  Specifically the sandwich gaskets have one side that is smooth and the other side has the seams from folding the edges over.  I have now seen two of these gaskets fail at the rear of the #4 cylinder. The water worked on the gasket on the down side and in one case the gasket blew out and in the other case the gasket just opened up in the area of the water flow behind the sleeve.   Both gaskets had the seams down.  It appears that if the smooth side had been down the water would not have been able to get into the sandwich/gasket.  I am thinking that the folding may have contributed to cutting the copper outer coating.

Charlie, Page 26 of my original Instruction Book p/n 501528/2,  indicates "the plain side of the gasket must be downwards against the cylinder block and should be coated on both sides with a sealing compound".  Paul McBride

Thanks Paul.  What I found is to place the side marked top up.  But of course none of them are marked any more.
