I'd appreciate any comments you might have regarding new tires for my 1963 TR-4, serial number CT13798LO.

I must replace my current Michelin XZX 165 SR 15 tires on standard Triumph steel discs. I'm looking for new tires to put on Panasport 15 x 5.5 wheels.

My local tire shop and I have spent all day trying various sizes of Goodrich Momentum tires. Neither the shop nor I insist on Goodrich, but the shop had a variety of sizes in that make and model. We tried a 205-70-15, 205-65-15, and 185-65-15. The 205s seemed much too big and barely cleared the anti-sway bar. The 185s looked better, but were short and didn't really fill the wheel well.

Any ideas about brands, models, and sizes?

The Kumho Power Star 758 has a 165/80R15 size, available from Tire Rack, that is very cost effective especially considering they'll probably "time out" before they wear out.

Bob, thanks for your reply.

Tire Rack has the 165/80 Kumho Power Star backordered. I'll see if my local tire shop has them.

I looked at the dimensions of the 15 inch Power Stars and see that the 165/80 has an overall diameter of 25.4 inches, pretty close to the 25.6 inches of the old Michelins I had on the car. The Power Star 185/65 is only 24.4 inches, but the 195/65 is 25.0. Do you think that 0.6 inch will make a difference?

Bill, I don't think you'll notice a difference performance wise, and as for speedometer accuracy, well that's not too good anyway :-)

Hello forum. I am restoring a solid axle TR-4A (someone T-boned my TR-3A).

I am interested in mounting TR-6 wire wheels to my car (6 inch rim width.)

Has anyone mounted the 72 spoke TR-6 wire wheels with 6" rims to their solid axle TR-4A? These wheels are never listed as an option for my car by either Dunlop or Dayton, and I am concerned that the reason is because there will be some clearance issues.  Huh

Thanks for any reply.

ps- Dayton can make me 16" 72 spoke wires with a 6" rim as well- has anyone tried going plus 1 or plus 2 with their TR?

I bought a TR4 two years ago and it came to me with TR6 solid ( I believe 6 inch) rims with 205/60 -15 tires.  They really filled up the wheel wells.  Also lowered the car and really messed up the speedometer accuracy wise.  I now am running Panasport rims with 205/65-15's.  I believe the speedometer is within reason now.  But am not sure yet, I just finished restoring the car last week.

For those of you out there trying to figure out tire measurements there is a site where you can down load a interactive program that will tell you the demensions  of the tires and the differences in your speedometer that will result from changing them.  You can get this by going to--- cat.cc   .  Do not type in www. or anything in front of the cat.cc  or behind it.  Good luck.
