Second place right out of the gate!

« on: September 12, 2007, 06:35:21 PM »

Hi all,

This may fall in to the category of "yeah, right", but does anyone have any clever way to adjust the hood - sorry, bonnet? I can't seem to get it rotated enough so that it clears along the edge near the windscreen. Edges toward the front are fine.

Thanks

I do not know if this is the best way or not, but it does work and is not real difficult. But it does take a little time.

When I replaced the bonnet on my TR6 I did it with the radiator shroud out and the grill removed.

I also installed the latch post last. After the bonnet position was established.

I first worked out where the rubber bumpers near the windshield corners should be. At this time I was not concerned about height.

Then I sat on my roll around work seat and I could easily reach through the front and work with the front mounts.

In your case you will want to loosen them at least on one side so you can rotate the bonnet. Bu trial and error you can get the bumpers positioned so the bonnet pockets sit on them correctly and the alignment of the bonnet is correct.

Then go back to the front and tighten the mount. Be aware that you will have to pull the hinge bracket so it fits before tightening.

The "fit" on these rugged little cars from the factory was never what we'd find acceptable today. You might have to sacrifice froward hood alignment for rear clearance. Most find the fender (wings) to hood (bonnet) fit a real challenge on the TR4-250 model range.

I just put the hood on a TR4 last week.  I am sure you realize that each of the hinges has room for front to back adjustment.  That is the four  bolts on the hood side and then the two bolts to the body.  There were two of us working on it.  One to hold it in place and one to loosen and tighten the bolts.  We found that one could raise the hood about half way up and the other could manipulate the bolts. It sounds like one side needs to go forward and the other side back slightly.  I really emphasize  that this is a two person job unless you have a third person  which is likely to help even more.

So I guess what you are telling me is that I need to get some friends so that I can work on my car  Grin

I'll have to work on that.
