For my 1972 Spitfire which I have owned since new.
All of a sudden the Fuel and temp guages are dropping to the bottom. Then moving up a little to get a partial reading, then dropping down again.

I have checked the fuse, it is OK. What's next? The 2 guages do this together.

Does the Spit have a voltage stabilizer? Are these two guages regulated by it? Might suggest looking at a wiring diagram and seeing if this is the case.

Is the Voltage stabilizer the same as the voltage regulator?
The regulatoir on this car is original as I have owned it since new in 1972.

No, a voltage stabilizer is not the same as a voltage regulator. The stabilizer works with the fuel and water temp guages to eliminate needle fluctuation. The concern with both these guages leads me to think it's a stabilizer. Go to the Moss Motors catalog on line, click on the Spitfires area, and then the electrical section and you'll find not only a modern solid state stab available but an explanation of how it works.
Good luck,
