How important is it to keep a tr6 the original color as shown on the body tag?

Tough question, one that might generate a fair amount of discussion. I'm not sure deviation from the original color code per se is all that bad; IMO, what's far more important is that -- to maintain or even possibly enhance value to some sellers -- any color change is as complete as it possibly can be. That means any painted surface even remotely visible, including at the very least under the hood and inside the trunk, is the same color as the outside. Practically speaking, this really is only doable during a complete down-to-the-bare-body, off-frame restoration.

This might not be quite so critical when going from Royal Blue to Sapphire (Imperial) Blue, but going from Java Green to Pimento Red is quite another story!  Grin

Thank you for your response. The car is coded sapphire Blue but has been repainted Red. Not a great job either I might add. The blue is showing through in several places. My goal is to strip it down to bare sheet metal and bring it back. Having red and blue paint on it is really a challenge. I am not sure of the final color yet (still some time to ponder that) but I a am a purist at heart and tend to go back with original colors.

Here is another opinion.  I agree that the change needs to be complete. There are some colors that I think should not be repeated on any car, however your sapphire blue is not one of which I speak.  Using an original color is rather important, however being a person who did not do that on one car, I would say that I painted it the color I wanted and was more than willing to live with it.  Original color can mean a big difference in a concourse competition or to some buyers.  But you really need to determine what pleases you and what you want to do with the car.
Being a TR6 you have a lot more choices  of original colors than TR2 and 3's.
Good luck,

Just to echo more-or-less what Charley said, I don't think it makes much difference unless you are trying for a concours winner.

Red is such a cliche, but some people like it I guess Smiley
