Overdrive switch or relay faulty?

(1/1)

motomadness1947:
I have a 1963 TR4 with overdrive.  The overdrive has been working well.  Yesterday I noticed when I switched to overdrive it did not shift and locking at my ammeter it was pegged full discharge.  When I flipped the switch back to overdrive off the ammeter went back to the correct light charging condition.   Okay I have a dead short.  Question is:  is this a symptom of a bad switch or relay.  If it is the relay: where is the relay located on the car.  thank you in advance

I found a wonderful article on line posted by Buckeye Triumphs    "A type overdirve troubleshooting tips"  Now to apply the procedure.  any of you Overdrivers may want to print out a copy.  it is really good

Gary MI:
The relay is located in the passenger (LHD) footwell just behind the dashboard and above the transmission cover.

IMO it is unlikely to be either the switch or relay at fault.  Could be the solenoid itself, but my guess would be that a wire is shorted to ground.
