Tr4 'A' Type Overdrive Transmission
(1/1)
ksd:
I've installed a rebuilt "A" type gear box with overdrive and have had no problems for approx 3000 miles. However, lately I'm experiencing difficulty shifting into first and out of first into second when the car is cold. After a few miles and she is warmed up everything is fine.
I'm confident that the clutch is properly adjusted, the slave cylinder correctly installed and there is no issue with the tapered pin that secures the shifting fork to the shaft as I replaced that with a 5/16 aircraft quality bolt. All clutch parts were replaced or rebuilt when I put the car together.
What would cause difficulty shifting into 1st and 2nd untill she's warmed up? I do plan to drain the oil and look for metal or whatever but other than that I'm open to any suggestions or ideas. I'm running 30 weight non detergent in the gearbox as suggested by the guy that rebuily the unit. Thanks: KSD

When it is working, how far up from the floor is the clutch pedal when the clutch starts to engage?
Were the pilot bearing & locating pins replaced?
What happens if you try to shift into reverse while it's cold?
ksd:
The clutch engages at the upper end of pedal travel and the throwout bearing and locator pins on the shifting fork were replace. Getting into reverse when she is cold is also difficult but ok when warmed up. Thanks KSD
TR3driver:
So the gears grind when you shift into reverse cold?
I meant the dowel pins that locate the gearbox to the engine block. If they are left out, the gearbox can sometimes shift enough on the other bolts to cause the pilot bearing to drag.
ksd:
Dowl pins were there to the best of my recolection. I do have difficulty getting the shifting lever into the gate for reverse but no grinding of gears.
To recap, hard to get into first, hard to shift from first into second and also difficult to get into reverse. No problems when she is wormed up and driven a few miles
