I was mucking about under the dash today and when I was done, neither the parking nor headlights work. The only thing I tried was to reconnect the headlight flash wire that was hanging loose. No flash, no spark, no welding sound...

I have chased out the wires and have discovered the following:
  • None of the wire colors match what I see in the wiring diagrams. I have a '72 - built in Dec. 71 - and am using the '72 - '74 diagram in Bentley.
  • There is 12V at the switch.
  • The 12V goes to the wrong terminal on the switch. Seems to be connected to the parking lights wire.
  • The power lead has had the bullet connector chopped off, and has a blade connector in its place.
  • It looks as if the switch has had new wire(s) soldered on by someone who doesn't know how to solder.
  • If I bypass the switch completely with jumpers across the car side of the wiring, I can make the lights work fine.

I have a spare light switch, and will try putting it in tomorrow, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them. I am ordering some new bullet connectors in the meantime. Just have to figure out how to temporarily connect to that blasted blade connector!

You probably know this, but JIC : There are two separate 12v supplies to the switch, one is for 'normal' headlights & taillights; the other is used only for the "flash to pass" function.

There are also some better schematics at http://www.advanceautowire.com/schematics.htm although they seem nearly identical to my Bentley in this area.

The problem seems to be in the switch. I jury rigged the new switch and the lights work just fine. The old switch is out, and hoping to get the new one in permanently later today.

As far as the flash circuit goes, the old switch didn't have a separate 12V supply - the flash-to-pass contact is tied to the normal 12V. Also, the flash wire wasn't wired to anything. So, a separate challenge will be to find the two flash wires and plug them in to get the flash working. Should be fun...

Thanks for the link to the schematic. I'll take a look and see if it adds anything useful.

Put the new switch in with a temporary connector until I get some good bullet connectors, and all works great. Now to check the high beam indicator bulb and see if (hopefully) it is just a burned out bulb.

Thanks, TR3driver, for the pointer to Advance Auto Wire. The schematics look a lot clearer than what is in Bentley. Based on what I can see, it appears that my "'72" is probably a "'71". It carries a build date of December 1971, so I have been unsure of what it really is. I am relying on Commission Number where I can.
