I would like to rebuild the steering box on my TR3A. I've read up on the process and Moss has a bulletin embedded in their parts list which is very informative; but by all accounts it seems you can do more harm than good if you don't know what you are doing. Does anyone do a professional rebuild or are there any recommendations.

Mark Macy does it professionally, I believe.  I've not dealt with him myself, but he seems very professional and I've never heard any complaints about his work.

But having done it myself with only the workshop manual, I'd say go ahead and tackle it.  The only hard part is getting the drop arm off the shaft, and using a proper Pitman arm puller (instead of the makeshift arrangement I had) should simplify that considerably.  Make sure the top cover adjustment is loose (or better yet have the top cover off) while setting the end play.  I wound up using a dial indicator to set the end play (insert extra shim, measure end play, remove shims equal to measured play).

Enco usually has an acceptable quality dial indicator and magnetic base on sale for under $25.  But it seems they are only available separately at the moment, for a bit more money.

Hi,

I know Mark Macy very well from TRA. As well as being a good friend I've had Mark rebuilt my starter and a couple of other projects. His knowledge and quality of work are second to none. If Mark does it you can count on it being right.  His knowledge and business ethics are incredible and you will never find a better man to work on your car. Mark goes above and beyond in his support of fellow TR addicts. Have Mark work on your project and you too will become a believer in Mark and his business philosophy.

I've never had Mark work on my car in person, he is too far away. But he has always been johnny-on-the-spot when I have sent email inquiries about issues I am trying to fix myself. Mark exemplifies the selfless dedicated triumph nut who earns a living from his hobby but doesn't rake anyone over the coals. Every email he sent also gently prodded me to rejoin the TRA of which he is a member (as I was 15 years ago but let lapse, and am now again due to his prodding!). He has the best interests of the hobbyist at heart. My only regret is that I don't live close enough to have a cup of joe in his garage while he fixes whatever I break! Grin

Randtor-
How did your rebuild go? I did mine as part of my overall restoration and could not find new bearings.
