I have a 73 and when I bought it, the seller told me you had to hold it in reverse to back up.  Dug into it when I got it home and determined that the transmission is fine - the shift level was just hitting the console and not fully engaging.  Comparing the shift lever to the one on my other 73 (one advantage to having two TRs of the same year) it appears to be about 2" shorter.  So I plan to replace the shift lever this winter.  Has anyone done this before and do I need to drop the transmission?  Looks like I may need to in order to get to the pin at the base of the shift lever.  I don't mind doing the labor but would rather not spend the time/effort if unnecessary.

Appreciate the input, Randy

You just need to get to the top of the transmission.  Rather than go into a long, ale-soaked digression of how to get there, I present this link on interior removal/replacement.  If you can get it to the pic in step 3, you'll have should have access to the bolts that hold the shift lever assembly in place.

If you find you don't have enough room at that point, then you get to pull the carpet and lift the transmission cover--then you'll look like this fellow--  http://www.chrispens.org/~kendall/clutchpin.html

Good luck, eh?

Appreciate the info - obviously I haven't removed the tunnel yet but I have had seats out and did some carpet work.  I will post results as I work on this.
