having just acquired my 62 TR-4, I decided while I am replacing the engine, it will be a great time to change all the fluids.  I went under the back of the car after looking at the shop manual drawing and guess what, no drain plug.  Where it is suppose to be it is molded flat, but no plug.   I though maybe someone had stripped the threads and j b weleded it sometime in the past, no it was never drilled at taped at the factory.

Has anyone else encountered this or is my car really rarer than I thought?

Yes , I have a TR4 with no drain plug.  Or maybe I should say that it HAD no drain plug until I had one put in.  This was on a car with commission number in the 20,000's, a 1963 car.  My 1962 TR4 ( in the 14,000 numbers) does have a drain plug.  So the thing you are forced to do is either pull the rear cover to change the fluids or drill and tap a hole for the plug.  A  lot of newer vehicles and pickups do not have a plug.

Thanks Charley, I believe my front pinion seal is leaking so, unless you have a solution, I will pull the rear-end and have that replaced (I do not have a way to put 100 ft pounds on the nut) and while it is out I will drill and tap for a drain.  I do not think the oil has been changed in there for many many years as it is more like cold honey rather than thick syrup.   Best to yo and thank you .  Bruce

How much is that seal leaking? Before going to all that bother, do make sure that the vent is free and clear. If it's not, pressure buildup will force oil out, usually past that seal, and in many cases simply cleaning the grunge and grime off the vent area will just about eliminate that leakage.
