1954 TR-2

« on: October 07, 2010, 10:53:59 PM »

This is a stumper.

I just received the heritage certificate on our 1954 TR-2 and everything was as expected.  Exterior is Pearl White.  The stumper is that is says the interior is Pearl Leather.  Pearl what?

Anyone have any idea what color Pearl Leather is?

thanks...Marc

This information is all I have, but it is not much.  This is a paint chip of EXTERIOR colors for the Triumph, but it is the only place I have seen "Pearl" mentioned other than Pearl White.  It is Pearl Grey.  The only Interior Trim chip I have doesn't mention pearl grey.  Again, for what it's worth.  Good luck.

Marc,
I'm sure you want a definitive reply, however, lacking that, here's a sheer guess:
The only “pearl” descriptors I find in my Triumph literature are associated with white and grey. That fact does not rule something totally different for “pearl leather” but I think it’s unlikely.  I certainly don’t like the idea of a pearl white/ pearl white car so that leaves pearl grey as the most likely option. Grey trim with pearl white paint would have been a standard option in your run of TR2s. In addition, pearl white/grey was unique to that small run of cars. In my mind, the unique but authentic colors and color combinations of the very early TR2s add some additional charm to these cars. It might be possible and worthwhile to try to track down one of the former (pre-restoration) owners. If you can confirm the original trim color then all you need to do is pinpoint the shade, and that might not be easy either. Great car, enjoy it.

Marc, "the book" reinforces what Tom says.  I have Bill Piggott's latest book here.  As I don't know your Commission Number, I can give you both TR2 color schemes.  As you know, up to TS1200, Triumph had an ungodly line of feminine colors picked out by Lady Black, bless her heart.

Up to TS1200, the Pearl White car came with Geranium, Blackberry, or Grey interior trim.  This Grey is probably Pearl Grey, per your certificate.  (Geranium, White, or Blackberry weather equipment (top/sidecurtains))

From TS1201, the Pearl White car came with Blue, Red, Brown, or Grey interior trim.  Again, this grey is probably Pearl Grey.  (Fawn or Black ONLY weather equipment)

It sounds like you have a beautiful car.  My next car would be a TR2, but they are prohibitively expensive on my civil servant pension.

Good luck with your baby.
