Looking at the hole for mounting an antenna in my TR4A, it would appear that I only have about 4 1/2 inches of depth before the base would hit the windscreen brackets.  Moss sells an antenna with 9 1/2 inches of depth, so obviously it could not be collapsed all the way down unless mounted at an angle (as I've seen done on many cars).  Anyone know of where one could get an antenna that collapses with such short depth or does anyone have any creative solutions?  Thanks in advance.

Most likely, the Moss antenna will not fit at all, as most collapsible antennas have a fixed chamber for the mast to slide into.  IOW it requires 9.5" below the fender even with the mast fully extended.

But there are a variety of non-retractable models available that should work fine.  It's probably best to visit your local car stereo installer (eg Best Buy), but for example I think the Metra 44-UT30 would look good and work well

Or, just a thought, you could plug the hole and go to a modern 'hidden' antenna.  That's what I plan to do with my TR3, if I decide the radio needs to work.

Randall is correct. If the hole for the antenna is in the dash section of the body, then it would have been fitted with a solid antenna.  If it was fitted to the fender then it could have had a retractable one.  I have had both types on TR3 and 4. I suspect that they were done as an after market item as I noted that the dash hole went through a under dash support bracket.
I am like Randall, I just welded up the hole and will not use an antenna at all. But in my case I opted for a CD player.  But truthfully, I cannot make myself turn it on as I just love to hear the sound of the car while I am driving.
